Just this Cushion, this Breath, this Moment

Deep resonant reverb
Fanning out in all directions
Summoned sleepers while silence embraced
To practice in the early morning dark

Dull gong-like strike
Of crystal quartz bell
Ebbing and flowing
First hour, every hour

Calling out to those pacing slowly
Through the damp chill, mindful
Of dew, grey drops and drizzle

Marking time
To lift time
Leaving just this cushion, this breath, this moment

Bells once called me from sleep
While silence embraced
To practice in the early morning dark

Who sleeps, who walks, who remembers
After joyful peals sound
There is left
Just this cushion, this breath, this moment

Written after ringing the hourly bell at a silent retreat.
